Get active for orchards and pollinators

Paperjam.lu

Get fit this winter and help benefit nature and the environment by participating in this half-day event organised by Bee Together and natur&ëmwelt.

The aim of the event is to create more light for the rare plants in a disused gypsum quarry in the Hiewelbierg area near Erpeldange-lez-Bous. Participants will be clearing brush in order to create a dry grassland, and keep it open for orchids and other wild flowers. Hiewelbierg is an important site for the 36 species of orchid in Luxembourg and is one of the sites of the LIFE Orchids project.
An explanation of the importance of the site, the dry grasslands project, and the site for flora and fauna will be given in the morning.
For families, the work is better suited for children of 10 years or older; children must be accompanied by a parent. Dogs are also welcome though they will need to be supervised by their owners and there may be small fires at the site.

Participants should wear hiking boots with a good grip and old clothes they do not mind getting smoky from the fire. They should also bring gloves, at least 1 litre of drinking water and a change of clothing. Tools will be provided. After the work, the Commune of Schengen will provide lunch at the site. Anyone preferring a vegetarian food option, should let the organisers know.
Find out more about the environment in this article “The reinstatement of degraded semi-arid and nutrient-poor grasslands”.
Participation is free of charge. Register before 28 November.
