Director Claire Thill tackles Ella Hickson’s experimental play The Writer in a new production staged at the Théâtre des Capucins in Luxembourg City.
The Writer premiered in London in 2018 and tackles contemporary gender relations. The protagonist known only as the writer sets out to write a groundbreaking stage work free from patriarchal influence, with the power dynamics of her personal relationships coming under scrutiny in the process.
Scenes from her work are then staged within the play introducing the character of the director in a meta move that allows for the structures of modern theatre making to be exposed and critiqued.
Renowned UK theatre critic Michael Billington said the play “keeps one riveted for two uninterrupted hours” in its “attempt to address the purpose of art, the nature of gender and the need for the mythic in a society governed by fixed, male-determined rules.”
Eight performances are scheduled in a run from 18 March to 1 April. For more information and to book tickets, visit
