In February, His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Luxembourg and Mr. Lex Delles, Minister of the Economy, SMEs, Energy, and Tourism, visited BorgWarner’s Luxembourg site to discover more about the research, design expertise, and product development for the next generation of electric vehicles.

is one of the world’s largest automotive suppliers, employing around 40,000 people in 82 locations across 21 countries. The global leader in clean, energy-efficient, electric mobility-enabling technology established the Luxembourg Technical Center (TCL) as the European headquarter for its PowerDrive Systems business unit. The main activity here is Power Electronics research and development for the automotive market, employing around 350 people, of whom about 40% are Luxembourgish residents.

and the Minister of the Economy, were welcomed to TCL by site manager Frédéric Baron and BorgWarner leadership. Mr. Baron gave a brief presentation highlighting the company’s history and industry activities before leading a tour of the facilities. The products developed in TCL and their functions in an electric vehicle were explored, as part of a larger and growing BorgWarner portfolio which covers all-electric propulsion areas including battery packs, eMotors, traction inverters, power electronics, thermal management, and integrated drive modules that include motor, inverter and gearbox in a single, compact package. These are essential to major OEMs worldwide, assisting them in transitioning their vehicle offerings to electrified drivetrains.

Innovation is key to the success of BorgWarner’s global vehicle electrification strategy. The TCL innovation department employs techniques such as multi-physical digital twin simulation and validation and developing finite element or product-dedicated models based on vehicle requirements and drive cycles. Artificial Intelligence is also embraced, using Deep Learning to build lightweight clones of high accuracy simulation models, for example to predict the temperature of a component during a variety of driving conditions.

BorgWarner is keen to continue expanding its activities in Luxembourg. Last year the company invested in new equipment including a prototype line, test and validation equipment and a fast charger, and in 2024 further spending is allocated to capacity increase of the prototype line and a new failure analysis laboratory among other items. The most ambitious local venture is yet to come as BorgWarner plans to move to a brand new site in Luxembourg that will replace the current one.

This relocation project benefits from the firm support of the Ministry of the Economy. The TCL team is exploring multiple collaboration opportunities with both the Ministry and Luxinnovation, Luxembourg’s national agency for the promotion of innovation and research. TCL is also a longstanding and active member of ILEA, the Luxembourg Automotive Suppliers Association, which has resulted in various partnership activities such as equipment sharing and discussions on best practice.

We would like to thank His Royal Highness the Crown Prince of Luxembourg and Mr. Lex Delles for visiting BorgWarner and for supporting our Charging Forward strategy in Luxembourg!
