In last year's TMT Predictions report, we labeled COVID-19 a catalyst for the prevailing trends in the technology, media and telecommunications (TMT) industry. Now, nearly 2 years into the pandemic, we still cannot escape its impact. But we do expect 2022 to be more than just recovery.
This year’s trends are largely driven by the economic and societal shifts of the global pandemic, creating a more connected and multi-device world that is increasingly dependent on digital. This, in turn, is fueling a growing need for chips, worldwide connectivity, and cutting edge technology.
On 25 January, together with our global TMT specialist, we will explore the topics that may impact your daily business in Luxembourg and beyond by showcasing our 10th TMT Predictions global report. We will highlight how the global pandemic is driving and altering TMT trends—and the shining opportunities emerging in spite of it, like:
- AIs wide shut—AI regulation gets (even more) serious: AI in 2022 will face intensifying regulatory scrutiny, with implications resonating across industries. With AI even more powerful than only 5 years ago, regulators worry about the implications for fairness, bias, discrimination, diversity and privacy.
- Women in the tech industry—gaining ground, but facing new headwinds: technology companies must renew their commitment to advancing gender diversity in tech as the pandemic recedes. The technology industry, or at least its largest players, will likely continue to close the gender gap this year. Deloitte Global predicts that large global technology firms, on average, will reach nearly 33% overall female representation in their workforces in 2022, up slightly more than 2 percentage points from 2019.
- Mental health goes mobile—the mental health app market keeps growing: mental health care needs are pressing around the world. There is seemingly an app for everything these days, and mental health is no exception; apps can deliver support on-demand, on the go. Deloitte Global predicts global spending on mobile mental health apps to reach nearly US$500 million in 2022.
- Upping the ante—venture capital investment in chip companies reaches new highs: as VCs push gigadollars to fabless semiconductor startups, the innovation ecosystem is a sure winner. Deloitte Global predicts VC firms globally to invest more than US$6 billion in semiconductor companies in 2022, down slightly from 2021, but much higher than the US$1–2 billion average over the last two decades.
- As the world churns, streaming wars go global: subscription video-on-demand (SVOD) providers’ pursuit of global viewers ignites competition and catalyzes SVOD churn. Customizing business models by market may be key to success. Deloitte Global predicts at least 150 million paid subscriptions to SVOD services to be canceled worldwide in 2022, with churn rates of up to 30% per market.
