Huawei is highly committed to developing basic sciences – and is well positioned to support the political agenda of the EU.

As many companies confront global competition, rapidly changing customer needs and technological shifts coming from an ever-wider range of fields, research and development (R&D) represents a substantial innovation investment. More than ever, a clearly articulated R&D strategy that supports and informs the corporate strategy is necessary to maximize the innovation investment and long-term company value.

But for R&D to deliver genuine value, its role must be woven centrally into the organization’s mission. R&D should help to both deliver and shape corporate strategy, so that it develops differentiated offerings for the company’s priority markets and reveals strategic options, highlighting promising ways to reposition the business through new platforms and disruptive breakthroughs.

This has been true for Huawei since its inception. Innovative activity is deeply ingrained in the corporate DNA of Huawei and our research-driven efforts reflect the value of our innovations. Huawei’s growth can be attributed to our willingness to compete in global markets and, more importantly, to our customer-centric innovation strategies. We place innovation at the core of our operating strategy. By capitalizing on optimal innovation mechanisms, Huawei continuously develops future-oriented technological advantages and capacity to better meet customer needs at faster speeds and lower costs.

In the globalized era, the significance of openness and cooperation to innovation is clear. Huawei cooperates with 150 universities across Europe in a variety of different research disciplines. We have 230 technical partnerships with different European educational institutes and research bodies. In Luxembourg for instance we have a partnership with the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust We operate 23 different research facilities in 12 countries in Europe, including Germany, France, Italy, UK, Poland, Belgium, Sweden, Finland and Ireland.

Huawei is closely aligned with the EU’s R&D ambitions

Horizon Europe, the EU’s next research and innovation investment program 2021-2027 is now underway. This is a key economic policy instrument for the European Union; one that will help deliver the political agenda of the European Parliament, the European Commission and EU Governments over the next six years.

Through the advanced research capacities of Huawei and via a strong engagement with European partners, we can assist Europe in building a stronger industrial strategy, putting in place a Green Deal to tackle climate change and helping Europe achieve the full implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Huawei is well positioned to strongly support the full implementation of the EU policy agenda moving forward. Indeed, Huawei ranked 3rd in the world in 2020 for R&D investment, according to the Building on this success, we aim to play an active role in ensuring that a comprehensive digital agenda at an EU level is fully implemented.

Through our network of 23 research centers and partnerships with over 150 universities across Europe, Huawei can support the policy interests of Europe in a collaborative manner under Horizon Europe. International cooperation in the areas of research and science must be promoted at all times. This ensures that optimum results will be achieved for society, while delivering innovative products and services into the marketplace.
