The screenings, free to the public, kick off in the forecourt of the Grand Ducal Palace. The programme-- organised by the Cinémathèque and the Ville de Luxembourg in association with Orange, Kinepolis and the Rotondes--includes cult classics as well as more recent blockbusters.
There are a total of 500 seats set up each evening, although in years past there have been plenty of people standing for the screenings.
The romantic musical “La La Land” will likely be a crowd favourite. The tale takes place in Los Angeles, with Ryan Gosling playing a musician who falls in love with Emma Stone, an aspiring actress. Despite the 2016 release, it has already received a cult following, helped in part by the 6 Academy Awards it took home, including one for Best Original Song (“City of Stars”).
Also in the lineup are the 1979 Woody Allen film, “Manhattan”; “Robocop”, a cyberpunk action flick; sci-fi favourite “Blade Runner”; and “Tootsie”, the 1982 comedy starring Dustin Hoffman who reinvents himself as Dorothy Michaels for an acting role.
Note that times below are just for screenings at the Grand Ducal Palace. Screenings will also take place, as last year, in the interior court of Théâtre des Capucins (3-5 August and 10-12 August) and the Rotondes (31 July-3 August; 6-9 August and 13-17 August).
The films all start at 9.30 p.m. and entrance is free. In case of rain the programme will still go on. The full programme will be available starting 3 July on www.cinematheque.lu.
