Joan Lindsay’s1967 novel, “Picnic at Hanging Rock”, probably most familiar through the memorable film by Peter Weir, has now been made into a new theatrical production by Tom Wright. The play debuted in 2016 in Sydney and has played in Edinburgh and, earlier this year, at the Barbican in London. BGT’s Tony Kingston snapped up the rights to perform the new play, which will be performed at Neimënster over three evenings.
The novel recounts the events surrounding, and the aftermath of, the disappearance of three schoolgirls and their teacher on Valentine’s Day 1900 at the Hanging Rock geological formation in Victoria. The story has passed into Australian folklore.
The new version features an all-female cast of five (photo Matic Zorman) playing all of the roles. Some of the actresses spend a large part of the play in male roles, and in some cases have to change between characters of different sex in a matter of seconds.
